I started running in 2001. The long road from non-runner to marathon finisher in just one year began with a resolve, after watching a friend finish the Houston marathon in January, 2001. It looked like so much fun and I wanted to be a part of it. But above all else, I saw it as a way to raise money for the American Cancer Society in memory of my late husband. A few days later, I started training for a 5K. Agony! I was barely able to run one mile without stopping! But by mid-Feb, I was able to run 3 miles (more or less), so entered that first 5K race, completing it in 31:19. I entered several more 5K races that spring, then joined USAFit to begin marathon training in July.
No one said it was going to be easy, and there were many times I wanted to quit, but I persevered, followed the plan faithfully, and just kept "plugging away" at it. Crossing that finish line after 26.2 miles for my first marathon was one of the most satisfying moments of my life!
I've entered many more races since then, including several marathons. Now I can't imagine NOT running! |
